Vegetable com partment with humidity filter

The humidity drawer is covered by a special filter which allows the air to pass through but retains the humidity.

A high air humidity keeps leafy vegetable fresh for longer. Vegetables and fruit should be stored at a slightly lower air humidity.

The air humidity in the vegetable drawers depends on the amount of stored food.

If the air humidity is too high, drips may form and cause decay.

High air humidity

Regulator to left - ventilation opening is closed.

Low air humidity

Regulator to right - ventilation opening is open.

“cool-fresh” drawer

(FreshprotectBox)

(depending on model)

The temperature in the “cool-fresh” drawer is about 32 °F/0 °C.

The low temperature allows optimum storage conditions for perishable food.

Food can be stored two to three times longer than in the normal refrigerator compartment without loss of freshness.

Select the temperature to be set according to the food in the “coolfresh” drawer:

-Fish and meat.......................... 31°F

-Milk and yogurt........................ 34°F

-Fruit and vegetables .......... 37°F

Foods suitable for “cool-fresh” drawer:

In principle all foods which are fresh and are to remain fresh for even longer, such as: meat and sausage, fresh fish, seafood, milk, butter, soft cheese, curd cheese, vegetables and fruit.

17

Foods not suitable for the “coolfresh” drawer:

Fruit and vegetables sensitive to cold, e.g. tropical fruit, avocados, papayas, passion fruit, aubergine, cucumber, peppers, as well as fruit that has to ripen, green tomatoes, potatoes and hard cheese. The refrigerator compartment is the ideal storage location for these foods.

When buying food, please note:

The “purchase freshness” is important for the shelf-life of your food. It generally applies: The fresher the products are when stored in the fridge, the longer they stay fresh. Therefore, when purchasing food, always check how fresh it is.

-To make ice cubes.

18

Notes:

Ensure that the freezer compartment door is always closed. If the door is open, the frozen food will thaw. The freezer compartment will become covered in thick ice. Also: Energy will be lost due to high power consumption.

When the freezer compartment door is closed, a low pressure occurs, causing a sucking noise. Wait two to three minutes until the low pressure has adjusted itself.

Features of the freezer compartment

(not all models)

Freezer calendar

The figures next to the symbols indicate the permitted storage period of the produce in months. When purchasing frozen produce, observe the date of manufacture or sell-by date.

Ice block

If a power failure or malfunction occurs, the ice blocks can be used to slow down the thawing process. The longest storage time is obtained by placing the ice block directly on the food in the top compartment.

The ice blocks can also be used to cool food temporarily, e.g. in a cold bag.

Freezing food

Freeze fresh, undamaged food only. Keep food which is to be frozen away from food which is already frozen. To prevent food from losing its flavour or drying out, place in airtight containers.

Freezing capacity

Information about the max. freezing capacity within 24 hours can be found on the rating plate (see figure on page 23).

How to wrap food correctly:

n Place the food in the wrapping.

n Press out all the air.

The following products are suitable for sealing the wrapped food:

Rubber bands, plastic clips, string, cold-resistant adhesive tape or similar.

Bags and polyethylene blown film can be sealed with a film sealer.

Storage duration of the frozen food

Storage duration depends on the type of food. At a temperature setting of 0 °F (-18 °C):

-Fish, sausage, ready meals and cakes

and pastries:

up to 6 months

-Cheese, poultry

and meat:

up to 8 months

-Vegetables

and fruit: up to 12 months

Purchasing and storing deepfrozen food

When purchasing deep-frozen food, comply with the following:

-Check that the packaging is not damaged.

-Check the sell-by date.

-The temperature of the supermarket freezer should be 0 °F (-18 °C) or lower.

If not, the storage life of the food is reduced.

-Purchase deep-frozen food last. Wrap in newspaper or place in a cold bag and take home.

-At home immediately place deepfrozen food in the freezer compartment. Use the deepfrozen food before the sell-by date runs out.

-Do not refreeze thawed food. Exception: If you use the food to make a ready meal (boiling or frying), you can refreeze this ready meal.
