PREPARING TO OPERATE:

THE BATTERY IN YOUR NEW APPLIANCE IS NOT FULLY CHARGED!

FIRST, READ THE SAFETY RULES. THEN FOLLOW THE “IMPORTANT CHARGING NOTES” AND “CHARGING THE BATTERY” SECTIONS.

IMPORTANT CHARGING NOTES

1.Longest life and best performance can be obtained if the batteries are charged at normal room temperatures.

2.While charging, the charger will normally become warm to the touch.

3.If the batteries do not charge properly:

a.Check house current at receptacle by plugging in a lamp or other appliance.

b.Check to see if receptacle is connected to a light switch which turns power off when you turn out the lights.

c.If house current is okay and you do not get proper charging, contact your nearest Black & Decker Service Center.

4.The appliance should be recharged when it fails to produce sufficient power on jobs which were done easily previously. Do not continue to use the unit under these

conditions. Repeat the charging procedure.

5.Unplug your appliances charger from the power supply before disconnecting the charger from the appliance. Unplug charger before attempting to clean.

6.Battery life is dependent on usage, storage temperature and time.

7.This power unit is intended to be correctly orientated in a vertical or floor mount position.

CHARGING THE BATTERY (FIGURE 1)

1.Attach charger cord to the appliance.

2.Plug charger into any 120-volt receptacle. Your appliance is now on charge.

CAUTION: This Charger can be used only with 60 cycle, 115-120 AC voltage.

TRIMMING HEAVIER GROWTH (Figure 4) – To cut older growth, with thicker twigs, use

a little extra pressure as you feed the blade through the growth. This clears the blade

faster and helps to feed the thicker twigs into the blade teeth. Slowly feed the shrubber

through heavy branches using only a portion of the cutting edges. Should the shrubber

stall on these heavy pieces, stop immediately and release the switch.

CAUTION: Do not use the shrubber for cutting stems greater than 5/16" (7.9mm). Use

the shrubber only for cutting normal shrubbery found around houses and buildings.

MAINTENANCE

It is easy to remove sap and dirt deposits when they are fresh and moist, but difficult after they become dry. Therefore, it is recommended that you wash the blades in water after each use. Hold the BLADES under a running faucet or in a pan of water and turn the appliance “ON” to help dislodge the deposits. Do not operate appliance with charger attached. (There is no electric shock hazard from the shearʼs low-voltage power supply.) If the buildup of sap is difficult to remove, it may be necessary (with the motor “OFF”) to scrub the blades with soap and a stiff bristle brush.

After cleaning, wipe the blades with a cloth and allow them to dry. Then, with a rag, apply a

FIG 7

thin film of light engine oil to the top and bottom of the blades. Do not over oil. Turn the

Appliance “ON” for a few seconds to work the lubricant between the blades.

LUBRICATION

No periodic relubrication of the bearings or mechanism is required.

CLEANING PLASTIC PARTS

USE ONLY WARM WATER AND MILD SOAP TO CLEAN THE PLASTIC PARTS. MANY HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS CONTAIN CHEMICALS WHICH COULD SERIOUSLY DAMAGE THE PLASTIC. NEVER USE GASOLINE, TURPENTINE, LACQUER OR PAINT THINNER, DRY CLEANING FLUIDS, OR SIMILAR PRODUCTS.

WALL BRACKET - SHRUBBER COMBO ONLY (SSC1000) (FIGURE 12)

A wall hanging bracket is included. To use the bracket, mount it securely to the wall and hang the components as shown in figure 12. The shear / shrubber blade is attached by first inserting the tab into the opening in the bracket and then allowing it to hang vertically.

STORAGE

The best storage place is one that is cool and dry. Store the tool away from direct sunlight, heating pipes and ducts, furnaces, etc. The best storage temperature is about +50°F (10°C). Do not store where temperatures go below +40°F (4°C) or above 120°F (49°C). Avoid storage in outside metal buildings where temperature can exceed 120°F (49°C) in summer.

For off-season storage you should first recharge the appliance for 16 hours. Unplug the charger from the wall socket and then disconnect charger from the appliance. (Fig. 1) Clean and lightly oil the blades as described in this manual and store the appliance and charger away.

BLADE NICKS

2

The blades are made from high quality, heat treated steel and they will hold a sharp edge for

a long period of time. However, if you accidentally hit a wire fence, stones, glass or other

hard objects, you may put a nick in the blade. There is no need to remove this nick as long

as it does not interfere with the movement of the blade. If it does interfere, use a fine toothed

file or sharpening stone to remove it. A replacement blade set is available

(Shear Only) from your Black & Decker service center when blades become worn.

DROPPING THE APPLIANCE

If you drop the appliance, carefully inspect it for damage. If the blade is bent, housing

cracked, or handles broken or if you see any other condition that may affect the appliances

operation, contact your local Black & Decker Service Center for repairs before putting it

back into use.

PREVENTING CORROSION

Fertilizers and other garden chemicals contain agents which greatly accelerate the

corrosion of metals. Do not store the appliance on or adjacent to fertilizers or chemicals.

BATTERY REMOVAL

When they reach the end of their useful life, the batteries in your appliance will no longer

FIG 11

accept a charge. Before discarding the old appliance, the nickel cadmium batteries must be

FIG 12

removed and recycled or disposed of properly. Cadmium is a highly toxic form of waste and

is extremely harmful to the environment.

Before attempting to disassemble this appliance, turn it on and run it until it stops to ensure

a complete discharge of the batteries.

Using a straight screwdriver, remove the rear product housing as shown in figure 11 and

remove it from the end of the appliance. Lift the batteries out.The terminal clips are quick

connect type and have a tab lock. Depress the tab to separate or pull the connector apart

with a snap. Recycle battery as per the “RBRC” section below.

TRIMMING INSTRUCTIONS (SHEAR, CAT#GS700 & SSC1000) (FIGURES 5, 6 AND 7)

1.Be sure that you have read carefully the safety rules. Use shear only for trimming grass and weeds.

2.For the best results you should trim only on a dry day, but water or moisture in the grass or on the ground does not create an electric shock hazard with this tool. Just be sure not to cut through any electric cords which may be in the area.

3.Keep your other hand well away from the blade, and maintain a stable working position so that you donʼt slip. Donʼt overreach.

4.Feed the blade into the grass at a rate that allows it to keep up cutting speed. Feed slower if the blade slows down. Watch out for foreign objects in the grass.

TRIMMING INSTRUCTIONS (SHRUBBER, CAT#DS700 & SSC1000) (FIGURES 3 AND 4)

SAFETY – Be sure to carefully read and follow the safety rules shown in this manual.

Recommended accessories for use with your tool are available from your local retailer.

WARNING: The use of any accessory not recommended for use with this tool could be hazardous.

THE RBRC™ SEAL

The RBRC™ (Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation) seal on the nickel-

cadmium battery (or battery pack) indicates that the costs to recycle the battery (or battery pack) at the end of its useful life have already been paid by Black & Decker. In some areas, it is illegal to place spent nickel-cadmium batteries in the trash or municipal solid waste stream and the RBRC program provides an environmentally conscious alternative. RBRC in cooperation with Black & Decker and other battery users, has established programs in the United States and Canada to facilitate the collection of spent nickel-cadmium batteries. Help protect our environment and conserve natural resources by returning the spent nickel-cadmium battery to an authorized Black & Decker service center or to your local retailer for recycling. You may also contact your local recycling center for information on where to drop off the spent battery, or call 1-800-8-BATTERY.

WORKING POSITION – Maintain proper footing and balance and do not overreach. Wear safety goggles, non-skid footwear and gloves when trimming. Hold the appliance firmly and turn the appliance ON. Always hold the shrubber as shown in these illustrations.

TRIMMING NEW GROWTH (Figure 3) – A wide, sweeping motion, feeding the blade teeth through the twigs is most effective. A slight downward tilt of the blade, in the direction of motion gives the best cutting. One sweep will usually cut all twigs in the bladeʼs path.
