Application Profile

Market: Household Appliance

Application Description: Assembling “key pad” or membrane switch for controls on washing machines.

Application Method

Die-cut membrane switch assembly is laminated to the control panel module.

Key Application Requirements

Easy to apply. No mess, clean-up or cure cycles.

Benefits/Advantages To Customer

Easy to assemble: 3MLaminating Adhesives help make it easy to apply the membrane switch assembly to the control panel, helping to improve productivity.

Easy to use: Membrane switches using 3M adhesive technology are easy to operate by pushing the key pad to activate th appliance.

Simplify design: Membrane switches using 3M adhesive technology allow several controls to be consolidated into one mechanism, helping reduce costs.

Integrated design: Membrane switches using 3M adhesive technology can match the aesthetics of the design of the appliance, providing an integrated look.

Consistent: These tapes provide consistent quality and reliable performance.

Design flexibility: The tapes permit bonding of the switch in the housing without drilling holes or attaching screws and mechanical fasteners.

Excellent adhesion: These laminating adhesive and tape products adhere well to metal and high surface energy plastics. 3M Laminating Adhesive 9672LE is ideal for adhesion to powder coated paints or polypropylene plastics.

Excellent durability: Membrane Switches using 3M adhesive technology provide an exceptional seal against environments, including many typical household cleaning chemicals.

Excellent Reliability: Membrane Switches using 3M adhesive technology perform every time the key pad is pressed.

Membrane switch or "touch control" panels have been used on a variety of appliances such as ranges, microwave ovens, dishwashers, washers, dryers and many small appliances. The membrane switches are produced by "laminating" graphic overlays and switch circuit film layers. The layers are held together with 3M high performance adhesives. 3M high performance adhesives help prevent delamination of the layers and protect the switch circuit layers from outside contaminants.

Made with a moisture-stabilized liner that can be die-cut to many customer specifications used to laminate the graphics to the flexible circuit. Double linered adhesives (3M 7952MP and 7955MP) are available for pre-cutting openings in the adhesive.

A polyester film with adhesives on both sides that acts as a dielectric spacer to separate and bond the top and bottom switch circuit layers.

The laminating adhesive is adhered to the backer board of the “touch control” switch, and then the entire membrane switch assembly is mounted to the inside of the cabinet housing. For more aggressive bonds, consider 3M 4962 tape.

For internal electrical splices.

For interconnection to flexible or rigid printed circuit boards.
