Ñ Important

zDo not wear your earphones when you are crossing streets or near traffic.

zDo not use your earphones whilst driving a motor

vehicle, it may create a traffic hazard and may be illegal. Remember to obey all of the safety rules in your area.

zDo not play the unit at a high volume. Hearing experts advise against extended listening at high volume levels.

zIf you experience ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or discontinue use.

zNo naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be placed on the apparatus.

zAttention should be drawn to the environmental aspects of battery disposal.

zThe apparatus is designed for use in moderate climate.

zThis portable MD should only be used within the range of 0°C - 40°C (32°F - 104°F).

To avoid accidental electric shock or other possible problems, observe the precautions listed below.

zDo not disassemble or modify the unit.

zDo not drop or subject the unit to shock.

zDo not use the unit near open flames.

zDo not spill liquid on the unit.

zDo not use an external power supply, other than the 2 V DC supplied with this unit as it may be damaged.

zSHARP is not responsible for damage due to improper use. Refer all servicing to a SHARP authorised service centre.

Ñ Storing the unit

Avoid using or leaving the unit in the following places.

zPlaces exposed to direct sunlight for many hours (especially in cars with the doors and windows closed) or near heaters. (The cabinet may deform, change colour or the unit may malfunction.)

zPlaces exposed to excessive dust.

zPlaces exposed to water.

zPlaces where temperatures are excessively high or low.

zPlaces (bathrooms) where the humidity is extremely high.

zPlaces with strong magnetic fields such as TVs or loudspeakers.

zPlaces exposed to vibration.

zPlaces where sand can easily enter the inside of the unit (beaches etc.).

zIf the unit is used near radio tuners or TVs, noise and/or picture interference may result. If you experience these problems, move the unit away from such devices.

zIt is not recommendable to put the MiniDisc into

a rear pocket, as this may damage the product when sitting.

z Using this unit near mobile phones may cause noise pickup. If it occurs, move it away from them.

To play an MD with the unit connected to a PC

If you use the commercially available headphones, hum may be heard depending on the compatibility with the PC. If this occurs, use the supplied headphones or remove the USB cable from the unit.

Menu button operation

Menu display

Various operations are performed by moving the M button on the remote control all around or pressing it.

When the unit enters the menu mode, the initial letter of each menu will be displayed in the first line and the contents of the selected menu in the second line.

Ñ Charging

When the rechargeable battery is used for the first time or when you want to use it after a long period of disuse, be sure to charge it fully.

1 Insert the rechargeable battery.

2 Connect the AC adaptor.

3 Place the unit on the battery charger.

z When the portable MD is turned on or operating, the battery will not be charged.

z No operation can be performed whilst charging. If you try to operate, "CH" will appear.

z After the rechargeable battery is charged or used, it will get slightly warm. This is normal.

Caution:

z Use the specified battery AD-N55BT only. Do not charge a battery (nickel-cadmium, alkaline, etc.) other than that specified.

z Do not remove the outer cover of the rechargeable battery. It may cause heat generation, fire, or explosion.

z Do not dip the battery in water, do not dispose of it in a fire, and do not take it apart.

z If the rechargeable battery terminal is dirty, charging may not start. In such a case, wipe off the dirt with a dry cloth.

z Do not disassemble the battery.

Ñ Display of remaining amount of battery

When the unit is set on the charger, the remaining amount of battery is displayed.

Ñ Charging time

Charging is completed in about 3 hours, and the display of remaining amount of battery will go out.

90 % of charging is completed. If you leave it for another 2 hours, the battery will be fully charged.

zCharge the battery within the range of 5°C - 35°C (41°F - 95°F).

zThe unit can be left in the charging state after it is completed.

Refresh

If you charge the battery before it runs out completely, the operating time may be shortened. To avoid this, the battery is discharged automatically and refreshed.

1 Take out the lead from the charger.

2 Connect the lead to the main unit (at DC IN 2 V socket).

3 Connect the AC adaptor.

Caution:

zIf the AC adaptor is not used for a long period of time, be sure to remove the plug from the socket for safety.

zInsert each plug fully.

Note:

When the power failure occurs whilst playing back music using the AC adaptor, unplug the unit. If it is left plugged in, playback may start automatically after the power is restored.

Inserting a MiniDisc

Use one commercially available alkaline battery (LR6, AA size).

When using the alkaline battery, be sure to insert the rechargeable battery also.

1 Open the battery case cover.

2 Insert an alkaline battery into the battery case.

Caution:

Do not put a rechargeable battery (nickel-cadmium battery, etc.) in the battery case.

1 Slide the OPEN lever to release the compartment door.

2 Insert a MiniDisc as shown.

3 Close the compartment door.

Notes:

zDo not place the MiniDisc under the holder.

zIf any resistance is felt, do not force the MiniDisc into the unit, as it may cause damage to the unit. If resistance is felt, remove the MiniDisc and reload it.

zThe lid cannot be opened if "TOC" is displayed; refer to the instruction on page 16.

You can record your favourite CDs or tapes to MD.

To make recording on an MD with the recorder connected to a PC, refer to page 9 "Connecting to a PC" in the operation manual (Software) for details.

Long Time Recording and Group Recording

Ñ Long time recording

Since this MD portable recorder adopts the 4 times long recording mode, you can record many tracks on one MD (supporting MDLP).

Up to 320 minutes of recording is possible on one MD (of 80 minutes).

Ñ Group recording

You can record tracks by the group of artists or albums, etc. That MD can be played by selecting the group.

When the group mode is selected for recording, tracks are played by the group, starting with the first track of the group.

When the group mode is cancelled, tracks will be numbered sequentially from the beginning.

Setting the group mode

1.Hold down the REC button on the remote control for 2 seconds or more.

Recording is paused.

2.Hold down the GROUP button on the remote control for 1 second or more so that "GROUP" lights up.

To cancel the group mode

Hold down the GROUP button on the remote control for 1 second or more so that "GROUP" goes out.

Caution:

The group-recorded MD may not be properly recorded or edited with other equipment.
