TRANSDUCER
Some X-55A'sare sold with a HS-WSBK transommount transducer. It
can be installed on anyoutboard or stern-drive (inboarcf\outboard)pow- eredboat. Itcan also be permanently installed inside the boat to "shoot-
thehull on some fiberglass boats. through1'
The "kick-up" mounting bracket helpspreventdamageif thetransducer
strikes an objectwhilethe boatismoving. Ifthetransducer does"kick- up", the bracket can easily bepushed backin place withouttools.
If your unit came with a transducer, read this sectioncarefully before
attempting theinstallation. Determinewhichofthemounting positions is rightfor your boat. Use extreme care if mounting thetransducer inside
the hull, since once it is epoxied into position, the transducer usually cannot be removed. Remember, the transducerlocation is the most
criticalpartofasonar installation. Ifitisn'tdoneproperly, the sonar can't
performat it's
designed potential.
Location - General
1.Thetransducer must beplaced in a location thathasasmooth flow of waterat all times. Ifthetransducer isto be mounted inside the hull, then the chosen location must be in the water at all times. If the
transduceris not placed in a smooth flow of water, interference will show on the sonar'sdisplay in the form of random lines or dots wheneverthe boat is moving.
2.The transducershould be installed with it'sface pointing straight down, ifpossible.
3. Ifthe transducer is mounted on thetransom, makecertain it doesn't
interfere with the trailer or hauling of the boat. Also, don'tmount it
closerthan onefootfromthe lowerunit. This approximately engine's
will preventcavitation interference with the propeller. Typically, the transducershould be mounted asdeepinthewateras possible. This
increases the chance that it will be in the water in high speedand reducesthe possiblity ofairbubble interference.
4.If possible, routethe transducer cableaway fromotherwiring onthe boat. Electrical noisefromengine wiring, bilgepumps, and areators can be displayed on the sonar'sscreen. Use caution when routing thetransducercable around thesewires.

Shoot-thru-bull v,s, Transom Mounting
Typically, shoot-thru-hull installations give excellent high speedopera- tion and good to excellent depth capability. There is no possibility of damage from floating objects. It can'tbe knocked off when dockingor
loading onthetrailer.
However, theshoot-thru-hull installation doeshaveitsdrawbacks. One, some loss of sensitivitydoesoccur, even on thebest hulls. This varies from hull to hull, evenfromdifferent installations onthe samehull. This
is caused by differences in hull layupand construction. Two, the angle ofthe transducer cannotbe adjusted forthe bestfish arches. This can
be a problem on somehulls thatsitwiththe bow highwhenat restor at slowtrolling speeds. Follow the procedure listed in the shoot-thru-hull installation sectionin this manual to determine if you can satisfactorily shoot throughthe hull.

GOODLOCATION
3. Don'tmount the transducer directlybehind strakes or ribs on the bottom of the hull. Typically, a good location on aluminum boats is
between the ribs clpsest totheengine. (Seeabove.) The port(left)side ofthetransom ispreferred formountingthetransducer, howeverifthis is
not possible, the starboard (right) side can be usedwith good results.
4. Once you determine the best location for the transducer, hold the
bracket against thetransom. Thetransducer shouldbe roughly parallel tothe ground. The bottom ofthe hull should be about halfwaybetween the centerline of the transducerand it'sbottom. (See the illustration
below.) Swingthebracket upandmark thetransomthrough theslots in the transducer bracket. Nowdrill two holes in the centerof the slots. Use #12 stainless steelsheetmetal screws to looselyattachthebracket tothe transom.
