INTRODUCTION
TheLowranceX-3Liquid CrystalGraph (LCG) isa compact unitthat packs more powerand featuresthan anyothersonar using a liquid crys-
tal display (LCD.).
TheLCD. setsthe X-3apart from othersonar units. Insteadof astylus
writing on chart paper or a flashingneon light,theX-3 displaysthe depth informationon a screenusing small squareswhichturn black whenan
echois received. Aseach echo isdetected, the signalsmove across the screen, leavingbehinda record oftheareathat wasjustpassed.
No othersonar hasas manyautomaticfeaturesastheX-3. Onceturned
on, itwill find and displaythe bottomsignal, fish, and other targets.Asthe depth ofthe bottomchanges,theX-3will
range, sensitivity, and other controlsso thatthe bottomwill always be displayedon the screen.Ifdesired, the only key on the keyboardthat
needstobetouched isthe off/on key.
However,theX-3hasbuilt in overridecapability that allowsthefeatures to beused in anycombinationtobestsuit local conditions.
TheX-3 isnitrogenfilled and sealed forcomplete waterproofprotection
ofthe internalparts. Theliquid crystal display and keyboardare back- lighted foreasyuseatnight, and theX-3 is fully covered byaone year Lowrancefull warrantywhichcovers all parts and labor forone year from
date ofpurchase.
INSTALLATION
TheX-3 maybe installedin anyconvenientlocation,provided
tiltedfor the best viewingangle.Roles in thebracket base allow wood screw orthruboltmounting. Thebracket may beattachedto aluminum
panelswithsheet metalscrews, however, apiece ofplywood may be required onthebackofthinfiberglass panelsto secure themounting screws. Stainlesssteel isrecommendedforallmountinghardware. Make
certain there is enoughroom behind theunitto attach the power and transducercables.
A Ye" holeis in thebase ofthegimbal bracket that allows the power and
transducer cables tobe routedstraight down through the mountingsur- face.Thesmallesthole that will pass one connector thru is¾". Thiswill
allowthetransducerconnector and cable tobepassed up through the
hole and gimbalbracket, then thepowercablewire can bepushed down thruthe bracketand dash.Afterthecables have been routed, the hole
may befilled with silicone rubber adhesive(RTV), or thebracket can be offset so that themajorityofthe holeis covered.

POWERCONNECTIONS
TwelvevoltDC power should be suppliedbythe boat'selectrical system. Thepower cable may beattachedtoan accessoryor powerbuss, but if you have problemswith electrical interference(randomdotsor lines that
show whenevertheboat's or other is thecable engine accessory on),
should beattached directly to the battery.
Ground
Neqalive)
Figure 1
Thepower cable hastwowires, red forthepositivelead and black is
ground or negative. An in-line fuse holdercontaininga3amp fuse is suppliedwiththeX-3. Thisshould beattachedto the red wire on the
power cable with thecrimp connector.Theother end ofthefuseholder should beattachedto thebatteryor accessorybuss.Ifthe cable isnot
long enough, splice ordinary#18 lamp cord to reach.Just becertain that thefuse holderis asclose tothe powersource (batteryor accessory buss)as possible. This will protect thepower cable and unitin theevent ofa short TheX-3is protected fromaccidentalpolarity reversalsandwill
notbe harmed ifthewires are reversed. (However, the unitwill notwork until theproper polarity is applied.)
Electrical noise picked upby the power cable can be minimizedby routing it awayfrom otherpossible sourcesofelectrical interference. One of
the largestnoise generators istheengine'swiring harnessthat runsfrom theenginetotheboat'sinstrumentpanel. This harnessusuallycontains a
wire forthetachometerwhich radiates RF(radiofrequency)energy. For thebestresults, keep thepower and transducercables away fromthe
enginewiring. Bilgepumpsare also noisy, sotryto keepthe X-3'scables away from them, too.
VHF radio antenna'scoax cable radiateRF energyathigherpower levels than even theengines wiring hamess.Itisvery importantto keepthe X-3'spowerand transducer cables asfaraway aspossiblefrom theVHF radio'santennacable.

BASIC OPERATION
When firstturned on, theX-3 automaticallyadjuststhe sensitivity, range,
and chart speedaccording towater andbottom conditions. In fact, it can be leftin this modeand itwill track the bottomand display
automaticallychangingthe rangeas the bottom depthvaries.Thesensi- tivitywill also change as required, to keep thebottom signal displayed. If present, fish or other targetsmay beseen.Atfirst, operate the X-3 in the
automatic modeonly.Justturn iton and watch itwork. Then, readthe following chapter on the X-3'sbasic operationand learn how to adjust it
foryourspecific needs. Later, readthe AdvancedOperation section to make the mostoutoftheX-3'sremarkablecapabilities.
OFF/ON
Theoff/on key isinthe lowerright hand cornerofthekeyboard.Itwas placed in this location sothatitwould be easyto find—even atnight.
Turning poweron
ToturntheX-3 on, presstheoff/on key. (Note: theunitwill beep every time a key ispressed. This ishow theX-3 signalsthatan entry on the keyboardhasbeen made.) Thechart lights will begin flashing, then turn themselvesoffaftersix seconds.A message(seefigure 4) will bedis-
played and the number"0" will flash. This number isthe digitalbottom depth display.Aftertheunithas foundthebottom, thedepth will be
shown in thedisplay, proper sensitivityand rangewill beselected, and return echoes fromthe bottom, fish, or othertargets will beginscrolling
across the display
Turning power off
To turntheX-3off, pressand HOLD theoff/on key until the displayis erased. This maytakeseveralseconds.Theunitwill beep continuously

TROUBLESHOOTING
Iftheunitworks properlywhenstoppedor at lowspeeds, butloses the bottomsignal athigh speed, thetransducercouldbeimproperlyinstalled. Readthetransducer installationmanualforthe correct mounting procedure.
Ifthe transducerisinstalled properly,then electrical interferencecould
be the cause. Doublecheck the installation, particularlythe power and transducercable routing.Make certainthatthey are awayfromthe
enginewiring or other wiring harnesses, especiallythe tachometer wiring.

eight feet)following thedirections on page 24 concerningshallowwater operationmay help.
Ifthe unitdoesn'tturnon when the ON/OFF key ispressed, then check thefuse or batteryconections fortightnessor corrosion.
Fish signals, especiallyin shallow water,do not alwaysarch, butappear as irregularlyshaped marks. Fish archesare most likelyseen in 40feet
or deeperwater,using a zoom range (forexample40to 60feet).Read the section "Fish Signals"onpage 25.
Iftheunitwill notturn off, rememberthatyou should pressand HOLDthe
ON/OFF key down untilthe displaygoes blank. Ifyou don'thold the key down, theunitwon'tturn off:
On rare occasions and in certain installations, electrical interference
could cause the LCG todisplay random informationon the screenor the
keyboardmay not function properly. (Forexample, pressingtheON/OFF key will notturn theunitoft). To restoreittoworking order, firsttry
pressing2nd-O-0. This should clearthe screen.Ifthis doesn'twork,
simplyunplugthepower cable from theback oftheunit plug itbackin, and turniton.
