Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems’ primary, real-timesupport channel. Maintenance customers and partners canself-registeron CCO to obtain additional information and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-addedservices to Cisco’s customers and business partners. Port Adapter Overview

The PA-FE-TXandPA-FE-FXport adapters provide a100-Mbps,100BaseT Fast Ethernet interface and support bothfull-duplexandhalf-duplexoperation. Refer to the “Fast Ethernet Overview” section on page1-9for additional information. Figure1-1shows thePA-FE-TXand Figure1-2shows thePA-FE-FX.

Note While the VIP2 supports online insertion and removal (OIR), individual port adapters do not. To replace port adapters, you must first remove the VIP2 from the chassis, then replace port adapters as required.

Cisco 7100 series routers, Cisco 7200 series routers, and Cisco uBR7200 series universal broadband routers support online insertion and removal (OIR) of port adapters.

Figure 1-3and Figure1-4show VIP2 models with installed port adapters. With the VIP2 oriented as shown in Figure1-3or Figure1-4,the left port adapter is in port adapter slot 0, and the right port adapter is in port adapter slot 1.

In the Cisco 7000, Cisco 7507, and Cisco 7513 chassis, the VIP2 is installed vertically. In the Cisco 7010 and Cisco 7505 chassis, the VIP2 is installed horizontally.

In Cisco 7200 series routers, port adapter slots are numbered from the lower left to the upper right, beginning with port adapter slot 1 and continuing through port adapter slot 2 for the Cisco 7202, slot 4 for the Cisco 7204 and Cisco 7204VXR, and slot 6 for the Cisco 7206 and Cisco 7206VXR. Port adapter slot 0 is reserved for the optional Fast Ethernet port on the I/O controller—ifpresent.

Note The I/O controller is available with or without a Fast Ethernet port. You can install both I/O controller types in all Cisco 7200 series routers; however, when you install an I/O controller with a Fast Ethernet port in a Cisco 7202, the system software automatically disables the port.

Figure 1-5shows a Cisco 7206 with installed port adapters and an I/O controller with a Fast Ethernet port. Not shown are the Cisco 7202, which has two port adapter slots, the Cisco 7204 and

Cisco 7204VXR, which have four port adapter slots, and the Cisco 7206VXR, which has six port adapter slots. The PA-FEport adapters can be installed in any available port adapter slot in Cisco 7200 series routers.

Figure 1-6shows a Cisco uBR7200 series router with port adapters installed. In the Cisco uBR7246, port adapter slot 1 is in the upper left position, and port adapter slot 2 is in the upper right position. In the Cisco uBR7223, port adapter slot 1 is in the upper right position. The port adapters are recessed into the chassis just below the I/O controller.

The PA-FE-TXand thePA-FE-FXhave an enabled LED, standard on all port adapters, and a bank of three status LEDs for the ports. After system initialization, the enabled LED goes on to indicate that thePA-FEhas been enabled for operation. (The LEDs are shown in Figure1-7.)

The following conditions must be met before the enabled LED goes on:

The PA-FEis correctly connected and receiving power.

The FE-equippedcard or chassis contains a valid microcode version that has been downloaded successfully.

The bus recognizes the PA-FEport adapter orPA-FE-equippedVIP2.

If any of these conditions is not met, or if the initialization fails for other reasons, the enabled LED does not go on.

Following are the three status LEDs and an explanation of what each indicates:

MII—Onwhen the MII port is selected as the active port by the controller.

Link—WhentheRJ-45or SC port is active, this LED is on when the port adapter is receiving a carrier signal from the network. When the MII port is active, this LED is an indication of network activity, and it flickers on and off proportionally to this activity.

RJ-45(or FIBER onPA-FE-FX)—Onwhen theRJ-45(or FIBER) port is selected as the active port by the controller.

Either the MII LED or theRJ-45(or FIBER) LED should be on at any one time; never both.

Receptacles, Cables, and Pinouts

Each Fast Ethernet port on the PA-FE-TXhas anRJ-45connector to attach to Category 5 unshieldedtwisted-pair(UTP) for 100BaseTX, and a MII connector that permits connection through external transceivers to multimode fiber for 100BaseFX, or to Category 3, 4, and 5 UTP or foiltwisted-pair(FTP) for 100BaseT4 physical media. Only one connector can be used at one time. TheRJ-45connection does not require an external transceiver. The MII connection (a40-pin,D-shelltype connector) requires an external physical sublayer (PHY) and an external transceiver.

Each Fast Ethernet port on the PA-FE-FXport adapter has anSC-typefiber-opticconnector for 100BaseFX, and an MII connector that permits connection through external transceivers to multimode fiber for 100BaseFX, or to Category 3, 4, and 5 UTP or STP for 100BaseT4 physical media. Only one connector can be used at one time. The MII connection (a40-pin,D-shelltype connector) requires an external physical sublayer (PHY) and an external transceiver.

Receptacles, Cables, and Pinouts

Figure 1-8shows theRJ-45cable connectors. Cisco Systems does not supply Category 5 UTPRJ-45cables; these cables are available commercially. Table1-1lists the pinouts and signals for thePA-FE-TXRJ-45connectors.

Warning The ports labeled “Ethernet,” “10BaseT,” “Token Ring,” “Console,” and “AUX” are

safety extra-lowvoltage (SELV) circuits. SELV circuits should only be connected to other SELV circuits. Because the BRI circuits are treated liketelephone-networkvoltage, avoid connecting the SELV circuit to the telephone network voltage (TNV) circuits.

Note Referring to theRJ-45pinout in Table1-1,propercommon-modeline terminations should be used for the unused Category 5, UTP cable pairs 4/5 and 7/8.Common-modetermination reduces the contributions to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and susceptibility tocommon-modesources. Wire pairs 4/5 and 7/8 are actively terminated in theRJ-45,100BaseTX port circuitry in thePA-FE-TX.

Figure 1-11shows the duplex SC connector (one required for both transmit and receive), and Figure1-12shows the simplex SC connector (two required, one for each transmit and receive) used forPA-FE-FXoptical-fiberconnections. These multimodeoptical-fibercables are commercially available, and are not available from Cisco Systems.

Depending on the type of media you use between the MII connection on the port adapter and your switch or hub, the network side of your 100BaseT transceiver should be appropriately equipped with ST-typeconnectors (for optical fiber), BNC connectors, and so forth. Figure1-13shows the pin orientation of the female MII connector on the port adapter. The port adapters arefield-replaceableunits (FRUs).

The MII receptacle uses 2-56screw-typelocks, calledjackscrews (shown in Figure1-13),to secure the cable or transceiver to the MII port. MII cables and transceivers have knurled thumbscrews that you fasten to the jackscrews on thePA-FE-TX’sMII connector. Use the jackscrews to provide strain relief for your MII cable. Figure1-13shows the MII female connector (receptacle).

Caution Before you attach your MII transceiver to the MII receptacle on yourPA-FEport adapter, ensure that your MII transceiver responds to physical sublayer (PHY) address 0 per section 22.2.4.4. “PHY Address” of the IEEE 802.3u specification; otherwise, interface problems might result.

Confirm that this capability is available on your MII transceiver with the transceiver’s vendor or in the transceiver’s documentation. If a selection for Isolation Mode is available, we recommend you use this setting (if no mention is made of PHY addressing).

Fast Ethernet Overview

The term Ethernet is commonly used for all carrier sense multiple access collision detect (CSMA/CD), LANs that generally conform to Ethernet specifications, including Fast Ethernet under IEEE 802.3u.

Note 100BaseTX is intended for Environment A, and 100BaseFX is intended for Environment B.

IEEE 802.3u is well suited to applications where a local communication medium must carry sporadic, occasionally heavy traffic at high peak data rates. Stations on a CSMA/CD LAN can access the network at any time. Before sending data, the station listens to the network to see if it is already in use. If it is, the station waits until the network is not in use, then transmits; this ishalf-duplexoperation. A collision occurs when two stations listen for network traffic, hear none, and transmit almost simultaneously. When this happens, both transmissions are damaged, and the stations must retransmit. The stations detect the collision and use backoff algorithms to determine when they should retransmit.

Both Ethernet and IEEE 802.3u are broadcast networks, which means that all stations see all transmissions. Each station must examine received frames to determine whether it is the intended destination and, if it is, pass the frame to a higher protocol layer for processing.

IEEE 802.3u specifies the following different physical layers for 100BaseT:

100BaseTX—100BaseT,half and full duplex over Category 5 unshieldedtwisted-pair(UTP), Electronics Industry Association/Telecommunications Industry Association[EIA/TIA]–568-compliantcable

100BaseFX—100BaseT,half and full duplex over optical fiber

100BaseT4—100BaseT,half and full duplex over Category 3, 4, or 5 UTP or foiltwisted-pair(FTP) cabling with four pairs; also called4T+ orT2, which is2-pairUTP over Category 3 cable.

Each physical layer protocol has a name that summarizes its characteristics in the format speed/signaling method/segment length, wherespeed is the LAN speed in Mbps,signaling method is either baseband or broadband, andsegment length is typically the maximum length between stations in hundreds of meters. Therefore, 100BaseT specifies a100-Mbps,baseband LAN with maximum network segments.

Electrical Equipment Guidelines

Follow these basic guidelines when working with any electrical equipment:

Before beginning any procedures requiring access to the chassis interior, locate the emergency power-offswitch for the room in which you are working.

Disconnect all power and external cables before moving a chassis.

Do not work alone when potentially hazardous conditions exist and never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit; always check.

Do not perform any action that creates a potential hazard to people or makes the equipment unsafe. Carefully examine your work area for possible hazards such as moist floors, ungrounded power extension cables, and missing safety grounds.

Telephone Wiring Guidelines

Use the following guidelines when working with any equipment that is connected to telephone wiring or to other network cabling:

Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.

Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet locations.

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.

Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.

Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage, which can occur when electronic cards or components are improperly handled, can result in complete or intermittent failures. Port adapters and processor modules consist of printed circuit boards that are fixed in metal carriers. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and connectors are integral components of the carrier. Although the metal carrier helps to protect the board from ESD, use a preventive antistatic strap during handling.

Following are guidelines for preventing ESD damage:

Always use an ESD wrist or ankle strap and ensure that it makes good skin contact.

Connect the equipment end of the strap to an unfinished chassis surface.

When installing a component, use any available ejector levers or captive installation screws to properly seat the bus connectors in the backplane or midplane. These devices prevent accidental removal, provide proper grounding for the system, and help to ensure that bus connectors are properly seated.

When removing a component, use any available ejector levers or captive installation screws to release the bus connectors from the backplane or midplane.

Handle carriers by available handles or edges only; avoid touching the printed circuit boards or connectors.

Place a removed component board side up on an antistatic surface or in a static shielding container. If you plan to return the component to the factory, immediately place it in a static shielding container.

Avoid contact between the printed circuit boards and clothing. The wrist strap only protects components from ESD voltages on the body; ESD voltages on clothing can still cause damage.

Never attempt to remove the printed circuit board from the metal carrier.

Caution For safety, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap. The measurement should be between 1 and 10 megohms.

FCC Class B Compliance

The equipment described in this document generates and may radiate radio-frequencyenergy. If it is not installed in accordance with Cisco’s installation instructions, it may cause interference with radio and television reception. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device in accordance with the specifications in part 15 of the FCC rules. These specifications are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference in a residential installation. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation.

VIP2 and the PA-FEPort Adapters

This chapter provides information on the PA-FE-TXand thePA-FE-FXport adapters and their use in the VIP2 in Cisco 7000 series and Cisco 7500 series routers. This chapter contains the following sections:

Installation Overview

Depending on the circumstances, you might need to install a new port adapter on a VIP2 motherboard or replace a failed port adapter in the field. In either case, you need a number 1 Phillips screwdriver, an antistatic mat onto which you can place the removed interface processor, and an antistatic container into which you can place a failed port adapter for shipment back to the factory.

Caution To prevent system problems, do not remove port adapters from the VIP2 motherboard or attempt to install other port adapters on the VIP2 motherboard while the system is operating. To install or replace port adapters, first remove the VIP2 from its interface processor slot.

Note Each port adapter circuit board is mounted to a metal carrier and is sensitive to ESD damage. Each port adapter has onePhillips-headscrew that secures it to its port adapter slot. We strongly recommend that the following procedures be performed by aCisco-certifiedservice provider; however, this is not a requirement.

While the VIP2 supports online insertion and removal, individual port adapters do not. To replace port adapters, you must first remove the VIP2 from the chassis, then install or replace port adapters as required. If a blank port adapter is installed on the VIP2 in which you want to install a new port adapter, you must first remove the VIP2 from the chassis, then remove the blank port adapter.

When only one port adapter is installed on a VIP2, a blank port adapter must fill the empty slot to allow the VIP2 and router chassis to conform to electromagnetic interference (EMI) emissions requirements and to allow proper air flow through the chassis. If you plan to install a new port adapter, you must first remove the blank port adapter.

Removing a Port Adapter

Use the following standard procedure to remove a port adapter from a VIP2:

Step 1 Attach anESD-preventivewrist strap between you and an unfinished chassis surface.

Warning During this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself.

Note If you want to install a new port adapter on a VIP2 with a single port adapter, you must first remove the blank port adapter from the port adapter slot in which you want to install the new port adapter.

Step 2 For a new port adapter installation or a port adapter replacement, disconnect any interface cables from the ports on the front of the port adapter (although this is not required). You can remove VIP2s with cables attached; however, we do not recommend it.

Step 3 Remove the VIP2 from the system. To do so, follow the steps in the section “Removing a VIP2” in the configuration noteSecond-Generation Versatile Interface Processor (VIP2) Installation and Configuration , which shipped with your VIP2. Place the removed VIP2 on an antistatic mat.

Step 4 Locate the screw at the rear of the port adapter (or blank port adapter) to be replaced. (See Figure3-5.)This screw secures the port adapter (or blank port adapter) to its slot.

Step 5 Remove the screw that secures the port adapter (or blank port adapter).

Step 6 With the screw removed, grasp the handle on the front of the port adapter (or blank port adapter) and carefully pull it out of its slot, away from the edge connector at the rear of the slot. (See Figure3-6.)

Step 7 If you removed a port adapter, place it in an antistatic container for safe storage or shipment back to the factory. If you removed a blank port adapter, no special handling is required; however, store the blank port adapter for potential future use.

Step 2 Remove the new port adapter from its antistatic container and position it at the opening of the slot. (See Figure3-6.)

Step 3 Carefully align the port adapter carrier between the upper and lower edges of the port adapter slot, as shown in Figure3-7.

Caution To prevent jamming the carrier between the upper and lower edges of the port adapter slot, and to ensure that the edge connector at the rear of the port adapter seats in the connector at the rear of the port adapter slot, make certain that the leading edges of the carrier are between the upper and lower slot edges, as shown in the cutaway in Figure3-7.

Caution To ensure a positive ground attachment between the port adapter carrier and the VIP2 motherboard and port adapter slot, and to ensure that the connectors at the rear of the port adapter and slot seat properly, the carrier must be between the upper and lower slot edges.

Step 4 Carefully slide the new port adapter into the port adapter slot until the connector on the port adapter is completely seated in the connector on the motherboard.

Step 5 Replace the screw in the rear of the port adapter slot. (See Figure3-5for its location.) Do not overtighten this screw.

Step 6 Reinstall the VIP2 in the system. To do so, follow the steps in the section “Installing a VIP2” in the configuration noteSecond-Generation Versatile Interface Processor (VIP2) Installation and Configuration , which shipped with your VIP2.

Step 7 If the interface cables are disconnected, reconnect the interface cables to the port adapters.

This completes the procedure for installing any type of port adapter on the VIP2. Proceed to Chapter 7, “Installing PA-FEPort Adapter Interface Cables,” to connect the necessary cables to your port adapter.

Cisco 7200 Series and the PA-FE

Port Adapters

This chapter provides information on the PA-FE-TXandPA-FE-FXport adapters and their use in the Cisco 7200 series routers. This chapter contains the following sections:

Note The Cisco 7206VXR and the Cisco 7206 can be used as router shelves in a Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server. For information about the Cisco 7206VXR and the Cisco 7206 as router shelves, see theCisco 7200 Series Port Adapter Hardware Configuration Guidelines .

Installation Overview

You might need to install a new port adapter in a Cisco 7200 series router or replace a failed port adapter in the field. In either case, no tools are necessary; all port adapters available for the

Cisco 7200 series routers connect directly to the router midplane and are locked into position by a port adapter lever. When removing and replacing a port adapter, you need an antistatic mat onto which you can place a removed port adapter and an antistatic container into which you can place a failed port adapter for shipment back to the factory.

Note Cisco 7200 series routers support online insertion and removal (OIR); therefore, you do not have to power down the routers when removing and replacing aPA-FE.

When a port adapter slot is not in use, a blank port adapter must fill the empty slot to allow the router to conform to EMI emissions requirements and to allow proper airflow across the port adapters. If you plan to install a new port adapter in a slot that is not in use, you must first remove a blank port adapter.

The PA-FE-TXandPA-FE-FXcan be installed in any available port adapter slot in Cisco 7200 series routers. Figure4-1shows a Cisco 7206 with aPA-FE-TXinstalled in slot 4.

Step 3 Grasp the handle on the port adapter and pull the port adapter from the midplane, about halfway out of its slot. If you are removing a blank port adapter, pull the blank port adapter completely out of the port adapter slot.

Note As you disengage the port adapter from the router midplane, OIR administratively shuts down all active interfaces on the port adapter.

Step 4 With the port adapter halfway out of the slot, disconnect all cables from the port adapter.

Step 5 After disconnecting the cables, pull the port adapter from its port adapter slot.

Caution Always handle the port adapter by the carrier edges and handle; never touch the port adapter’s components or connector pins. (See Figure4-4.)

Step 6 Place the port adapter on an antistatic surface with its components facing upward or in a static shielding bag. If the port adapter will be returned to the factory, immediately place it in a static shielding bag.

Step 4 With the metal carrier aligned in the slot guides, gently slide the port adapter halfway into the slot.

Caution Do not slide the port adapter all the way into the slot until you have connected all required cables. Trying to do so disrupts normal operation of the router.

Step 5 With the port adapter halfway in the slot, connect all required cables to the port adapter.

Step 6 After connecting the cables, carefully slide the port adapter all the way into the slot until you feel the port adapter’s connectors make contact with the midplane.

Step 7 Move the port adapter lever to the locked position. Figure4-6shows the lever in the locked position.

Note If the lever does not move to the locked position, the port adapter is not completely seated in the midplane. Carefully pull the port adapter halfway out of the slot, reinsert it, and move the port adapter lever to the locked position.

You might need to install a new port adapter in a Cisco uBR7200 series universal broadband router or replace a failed port adapter in the field. In either case, no tools are necessary; all port adapters available for the Cisco uBR7200 series connect directly to the router midplane and are locked into position by a port adapter lever (Cisco uBR7223) or retention clip (Cisco UBR7246). When removing and replacing a port adapter, you need an antistatic mat onto which you can place a removed port adapter and an antistatic container into which you can place a failed port adapter for shipment back to the factory.

Step 2 Unlock the retaining mechanism of the port adapter:

For a Cisco uBR7246, slide the port adapter retention clip for the desired port adapter slot down in the unlocked position. The retention clip remains in the unlocked position.

Use the following procedure to install a new port adapter in a Cisco uBR7200 series universal broadband router:

Step 1 Attach anESD-preventivewrist strap between you and an unfinished chassis surface.

Warning During this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself.

Step 2 Use both hands to grasp the port adapter by its metal carrier edges and position the port adapter so that its components are downward. (See Figure5-5.)

Step 3 Align the left and right edge of the port adapter metal carrier between the guides in the port adapter slot. (See Figure5-6.)

Step 4 With the metal carrier aligned in the slot guides, gently slide the port adapter halfway into the slot.

Caution Do not slide the port adapter all the way into the slot until you have connected all required cables. Trying to do so disrupts normal operation of the router.

Step 5 With the port adapter halfway in the slot, connect all required cables to the port adapter.

Step 6 After connecting the cables, carefully slide the port adapter all the way into the slot until you feel the port adapter’s connectors make contact with the midplane.

Step 7 For a Cisco uBR7246, slide the port adapter retention clip to the locked position. Figure5-7shows the retention clip in the locked position.

Note If the retention clip does not slide up to the locked position, the port adapter is not completely seated in the midplane. Slide the retention clip completely down to the unlocked position. Carefully pull the port adapter halfway out of the slot, reinsert it, and slide the retention clip up to the locked position.

Depending on your circumstances, you might need to install a new port adapter in a Cisco 7100 series router or replace a failed port adapter in the field. All port adapters available for the Cisco 7100 series connect directly to the router and are locked into position by a locking tab with two screws (see Figure 6-1or Figure6-2).You need a number 2 Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws.

Note Cisco 7100 series routers support online insertion and removal (OIR); therefore, you do not have to power down the router when removing and replacing a port adapter.

When a port adapter slot is not in use, a blank port adapter must fill the empty slot to allow the router to conform to EMI emissions requirements and to allow proper airflow across the port adapters. If you plan to install a new port adapter in a slot that is not in use, you must first remove a blank port adapter.

Removing a Port Adapter

Use the following procedure to remove a port adapter from a Cisco 7100 series router:

Step 1 Attach anESD-preventivewrist strap between you and the chassis. (See Figure6-1or Figure6-2for the location of the ESD plug.)

Step 2 Use a number 2 Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws on the locking tab; then slide the tab down to the unlocked position. (See Figure6-1or Figure6-2.)

Step 3 Grasp the handle on the port adapter and pull the port adapter from the router, about halfway out of its slot. If you are removing a blank port adapter, pull the blank port adapter completely out of the chassis slot.

Note As you disengage the port adapter from the router, OIR administratively shuts down all active interfaces on the port adapter.

Step 4 With the port adapter halfway out of the slot, disconnect all cables from the port adapter.

Step 5 After disconnecting the cables, pull the port adapter from its chassis slot.

Caution Always handle the port adapter by the carrier edges and handle; never touch the port adapter’s components or connector pins. (See Figure6-3.)

Step 6 Place the port adapter on an antistatic surface with its components facing upward, or in a static shielding bag. If the port adapter will be returned to the factory, immediately place it in a static shielding bag.

Step 7 Install a blank port adapter or replacement port adapter to maintain proper flow of cooling air across the internal components and move the port adapter lever to the locked position and secure. For procedures on how to install a port adapter, see the next section, “Installing a Port Adapter”.

Note The blank port adapter is available from Cisco Systems as a spare. The blank port adapter product number isMAS-7100-PABLANK.

This completes the procedure for removing a port adapter from a Cisco 7100 series router.

Installing a Port Adapter

Use the following procedure to install a new port adapter in a Cisco 7100 series router:

Step 1 Attach anESD-preventivewrist strap between you and the chassis. (See Figure6-1or

Figure 6-2for the location of the ESD plug.)

Step 2 Ensure that the locking tab is down in the unlocked position. If it is locked, use a number 2 Phillips to loosen the screws; then slide the tab down to the unlocked position. (See Figure6-1or Figure6-2.)

Step 3 Remove the new port adapter from its antistatic container and position it at the opening of the slot.

Step 4 Use both hands to grasp the port adapter by its metal carrier edges, and position the port adapter so that its components face downward. (See Figure6-3.)

Step 5 Align the left and right edge of the port adapter metal carrier between the guides in the port adapter slot. (See Figure6-4.)

Step 6 With the metal carrier aligned in the slot guides, gently slide the port adapter halfway into the slot.

To continue your PA-FE-TXandPA-FE-FXport adapter installation, you must install the port adapter’s interface cables. The following instructions apply to all supported platforms. This chapter contains the following sections:

On a single PA-FE,you can useeither theRJ-45(or SC forPA-FE-FX)connectionor the MII connection.(RJ-45,SC, and MII cables are not available from Cisco Systems; they are available from outside commercial cable vendors.) If you have twoPA-FEport adapters on your VIP2, you can use theRJ-45(or SC forPA-FE-FX)connection on one port adapter and the MII connection on the other port adapter.

Caution Before you attach your MII transceiver to the MII receptacle on yourPA-FE,ensure that your MII transceiver responds to physical sublayer (PHY) address 0 per section 22.2.4.4. “PHY Address” of the IEEE 802.3u specification; otherwise, interface problems might result. Confirm that this capability is available on your MII transceiver with the transceiver’s vendor or in the transceiver’s documentation. If a selection for Isolation Mode is available, we recommend you use this setting (if no mention is made of PHY addressing).

Attaching PA-FEPort Adapter Interface Cables

Use the following procedure to connect RJ-45,SC(PA-FE-FX),or MII cables:

Step 1 If you have MII connections, attach an MII cable directly to the MII receptacle on thePA-FEor attach a 100BaseT transceiver, with the media appropriate to your application, to the MII receptacle on thePA-FE.(See Figure7-1for thePA-FE-TXand Figure7-2for thePA-FE-FX.)

If you have RJ-45connections, attach the Category 5 UTP cable directly to theRJ-45port on thePA-FE.(See Figure7-1forPA-FE-TXand Figure7-2forPA-FE-FX.)ThePA-FEis an end station device and not a repeater. Youmust connect thePA-FEto a repeater or hub.

If you have an SC connection (PA-FE-FX),attach the cable directly to the SC port on thePA-FE-FX.(See Figure7-2.)Use either one duplex SC connector or two simplex SC connectors, and observe the correct relationship between the receive (R) and transmit (T) ports on thePA-FE-FXand your repeater.

Note After your MII transceiver is connected and thePA-FEinterface is configured as up, you can verify that your MII transceiver responds to physical sublayer (PHY) address 0 by disconnecting the transceiver from the MII receptacle; if thePA-FEinterface goes down, then your MII transceiver responds to PHY address 0.

After you verify that the new PA-FEinterface is installed correctly (the enabled LED goes on), use theprivileged-levelconfigure command to configure the new interfaces. Have the following information available:

Protocols you plan to route on each new interface

IP addresses if you plan to configure the interfaces for IP routing

A decision about the use of bridging on the new interfaces

The configure command requiresprivileged-levelaccess to the EXEC command interpreter, which usually requires a password. Contact your system administrator if necessary to obtainEXEC-levelaccess.

Note You can configure eachPA-FEinterface on aPA-FE-TXorPA-FE-FXat 100 Mbps, half duplex or full duplex, for a maximum aggregate bandwidth of 200 Mbps.Half-duplexoperation is the default.

Using the EXEC Command Interpreter

Using the EXEC Command Interpreter

You modify the configuration of your router through the software command interpreter called the EXEC. You must enter the privileged level of the EXEC command interpreter (also called enable mode) with theenable command before you can use theconfigure command to configure a new interface or to change the existing configuration of an interface. The system prompts you for a password if one has been set.

The system prompt for the privileged level ends with a pound sign (#) instead of an angle bracket

(>). At the console terminal, use the following procedure to enter the privileged level:

Step 1 At theuser-levelEXEC prompt, enter theenable command. The EXEC prompts you for aprivileged-levelpassword as follows:

Router> enable

Password:

Step 2 Enter the password (the password is case sensitive). For security purposes, the password is not displayed.

When you enter the correct password, the system displays the privileged-levelsystem prompt (#):

If you installed a new PA-FEor if you want to change the configuration of an existing interface, you must enter configuration mode using theconfiguration command. If you replaced an interface that was previously configured, the system recognizes the new interface and brings it up in its existing configuration.

Identifying Chassis Slot, Port Adapter Slot, and PA-FEInterface Port

Numbers

The following section describes how to identify the chassis slot, port adapter slot, and PA-FEinterface port numbers for Cisco 7100 series routers, Cisco 7200 series routers, Cisco uBR7200 series universal broadband routers, and the VIP2.

Cisco 7200 Series and Cisco uBR7200 Series Ports

Physical port addresses specify the actual physical location of each interface port on the router. On Cisco 7200 series routers and Cisco uBR7200 series universal broadband routers, this address is composed of two parts in the format port adapter slot number/interface port number, as follows:

The first number identifies the slot in which the PA-FEis installed.

The second number identifies the interface port on the PA-FE,which is always numbered as interface 0.

Note For the Cisco 7206VXR and Cisco 7206 router shelves, physical port addresses are composed of athree-partnumber in the formatshelf number/port adapter slot number/interface port number, where theshelf number is a number assigned to the router shelf during the initial configuration of the Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server. A Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server can consist of several shelves; therefore, each shelf is assigned a shelf number.

The Cisco 7206VXR and the Cisco 7206 can be used as router shelves in a Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server. For information about the Cisco 7206VXR and the Cisco 7206 as router shelves, see the Cisco 7200 Series Port Adapter Hardware Configuration Guidelines .

You can identify interface ports by physically checking the slot/interface port location on the front of the router or by using show commands to display information about a specific interface or all interfaces in the router.

Interface ports maintain the same address regardless of whether other port adapters are installed or removed from the slot. However, when you move a port adapter to a different slot, the port adapter slot number in the address changes to reflect the new slot number.

In Cisco 7200 series routers, port adapter slots are numbered from the lower left to the upper right, beginning with port adapter slot 1 and continuing through port adapter slot 2 for the Cisco 7202, slot 4 for the Cisco 7204 and Cisco 7204VXR, and slot 6 for the Cisco 7206 and Cisco 7206VXR. Port adapter slot 0 is reserved for the optional Fast Ethernet port on the I/O controller—ifpresent. Figure8-1shows the interface port of aPA-FE-TXinstalled in slot 4 of a Cisco 7206.

The individual interface port numbers always begin with 0. The number of additional ports depends on the number of ports on a port adapter. For example, if the PA-FEin slot 4 (with the interface address 4/0 [port adapter slot 4, and interface port 0]) were in slot 2, the port adapter’s interface would be numbered 2/0.

Note For the Cisco 7206VXR and Cisco 7206 router shelves, thePA-FEin port adapter slot 4 would have the addressx/4/0, wherex is the number assigned to the router shelf during the initial configuration of the Cisco AS5800 Universal Access Server.

Figure 8-2shows the port adapter slots and interface ports of a Cisco uBR7200 series router. For a Cisco uBR7246, the port adapter slots are numbered 1 and 2 and for a Cisco uBR7223, the port adapter slot in numbered 1. (Slot 0 is always reserved for the Fast Ethernet port on the I/Ocontroller—ifpresent.) The individual interface port numbers always begin with 0. You can identify interface ports by physically checking the slot/interface port location on the front of the router or by using show commands to display information about a specific interface or all interfaces in the router.

VIP2 Ports

On the VIP2 installed in Cisco 7500 series or Cisco 7000 series routers, physical port addresses specify the actual physical location of each interface port on the router interface processor end. (See Figure 8-3.)However, when you move a VIP2 to a different slot, the first number in the address changes to reflect the new chassis slot number. This address is composed of athree-partnumber in the formatchassis slot number/port adapter number/interface port number, as follows:

The first number identifies the chassis slot in which the VIP2 is installed (as shown in the example system in Figure 8-3).

The second number identifies the physical port adapter number on the VIP2, either 0 or 1.

The third number identifies the interface port on the PA-FE,which is always numbered as interface 0.

Note Although the processor slots in theseven-slotCisco 7000 and Cisco 7507 andthirteen-slotCisco 7513 are vertically oriented and those in thefive-slotCisco 7010 and Cisco 7505 are horizontally oriented, all models use the same method for slot and port numbering.

Interface ports on the VIP2 maintain the same address regardless of whether other interface processors are installed or removed. However, when you move a VIP2 to a different slot, the first number in the address changes to reflect the new slot number.

Figure 8-3shows some of the slot port adapter and interface ports of a sample Cisco 7505 router. The first port adapter slot number is 0, and the second port adapter slot number is 1. The individual FE interface numbers are always 0. For example, on theFE-equippedVIP2 in slot 3 (see Figure8-3),the address of the FE interface is 3/0/0 (interface processor slot 3, port adapter slot 0, and interface port 0). If a secondPA-FEwere installed in port adapter slot 1 on this VIP2, its address would be 3/1/0.

Note If you remove thePA-FE-equippedVIP2 (see Figure8-3)from slot 3 and install it in interface processor slot 2, the address of this FE port becomes 2/0/0.

You can also identify interface ports by physically checking the slot/port adapter/interface port location on the back of the router or by using software commands to display information about a specific interface or all interfaces in the router.

Cisco 7100 Series Ports

In Cisco 7100 series routers, the slot number is the location in the chassis where the interface resides and theport number is the physical port. Interfaces in the Cisco IOS software are identified by a type, slot number, and port number. For example, serial 3/1 indicates port 1 on the serial port adapter in slot 3.

Slots in the Cisco 7120 series routers are numbered as shown in Figure 8-4.The fixed LAN interface is slot 0, the fixed WAN interface is slot 1, and the modular port adapter interface is slot 3. On the Cisco 7120 series slots 2 and 4 are not used. Slot 5 is the service adapter.

Performing a Basic Configuration

Following are instructions for a basic configuration enabling an interface and specifying IP routing. You might also need to enter other configuration subcommands, depending on the requirements for your system configuration and the protocols you plan to route on the interface. For more information on FE interface configurations on supported platforms, refer to the modular configuration and modular command reference publications in the Cisco IOS software configuration documentation set that corresponds to the software release installed on your Cisco hardware.

In the following procedure, press the Return key after each step unless otherwise noted. At any time you can exit the privileged level and return to the user level by enteringdisable at the prompt as follows:

For the Cisco 7100 series, Cisco 7200 series, and the Cisco uBR7200 series, at the prompt specify the first interface to configure by entering the subcommandinterface, followed by thetype (fastethernet)and slot/interface (port adapter slot number and interface number). The example that follows is for the first interface of the port adapter in slot 4:

Note For the Cisco 7206VXR and Cisco 7206 router shelves, the interface specified in the above example would include a shelf number. For example, the command interfacefastethernet 5/4/0 would specify the first FE interface of the port adapter in slot 4 of router shelf 5.

For the VIP2, at the prompt specify the first interface to configure by entering the subcommand interface, followed by thetype (fastethernet) andslot/port-adapter/interface.The example that follows is for the first interface of the first port adapter, on a VIP2 in interface processor slot 1:

Step 3 If IP routing is enabled on the system, you can assign an IP address and subnet mask to the interface with theip address configuration subcommand, as in the following example:

Step 4 Add any additional configuration subcommands required to enable routing protocols and set the interface characteristics.

Step 5 Change the shutdown state to up and enable the interface as follows:

Router(config-int)#no shutdown

Step 6 Configure additional interfaces as required.

Step 7 When you have included all of the configuration subcommands to complete the configuration, pressCtrl-Z to exit configuration mode.

Step 8 Write the new configuration to nonvolatile memory as follows:

Checking the Configuration

After configuring the new interface, use the show commands to display the status of the new interface or all interfaces and theping command to check connectivity.

Using show Commands to Verify the New Interface Status

The following steps use show commands to verify that the new interfaces are configured and operating correctly.

Step 1

Use the show version command to display the system hardware configuration. Ensure

 

that the list includes the new interfaces.

 

Step 2

Display the current port adapters and interfaces as follows:

 

For the Cisco 7100 series, Cisco 7200 series, and the Cisco uBR7200 series, display

 

 

all the current port adapters and their interfaces with the show controllers command.

 

 

Verify that the new PA-FEappears in the correct slot.

 

For the VIP2, display all the current interface processors and their interfaces with the

 

 

show controllers cbus command. Verify that the new VIP2 appears in the correct slot.

Step 3

Specify the new interfaces as follows:

 

 

For the Cisco 7100, Cisco 7200 series and the Cisco uBR7200 series, specify one of

 

 

the new interfaces with the show interfaces port adapter type slot/interface command

 

 

and verify that the first line of the display specifies the interface with the correct slot

 

 

number. Also verify that the interface and line protocol are in the correct state: up or

Display the protocols configured for the entire system and specific interfaces with the

 

show protocols command. If necessary, return to configuration mode to add or remove

 

protocol routing on the system or specific interfaces.

Step 5

Display the running configuration file with the

show running-configcommand. Display

 

the configuration stored in NVRAM using the

show startup-configcommand. Verify

that the configuration is accurate for the system and each interface.

Checking the Configuration

If the interface is down and you configured it as up, or if the displays indicate that the hardware is not functioning properly, ensure that the network interface is properly connected and terminated. If you still have problems bringing the interface up, contact a service representative for assistance.

Cisco 7200 Series, Cisco 7100 Series, and Cisco uBR7200 Series show Commands

With the show interfaces type slot/port command, use arguments such as the interface type (fastethernet, and so forth) and the port number (slot/port) to display information about a specific interface only. The following example of theshow interfaces fastethernet command shows information specific to the Fast Ethernet interface on the firstPA-FEin slot 4:

Using the ping Command

The ping command allows you to verify that an interface port is functioning properly and to check the path between a specific port and connected devices at various locations on the network. After you verify that the system has booted successfully and is operational, you can use this command to verify the status of interface ports. Refer to the documentation resources listed in the “Related Documentation” section on page vi for detailed command descriptions and examples.

The ping command sends echo request packets out to a remote device at an IP address that you specify. After sending an echo request, the command waits a specified time for the remote device to reply. Each echo reply appears as an exclamation point (!) on the console terminal; each request that is not returned before the specified timeout appears as a period (.). A series of exclamation points (!!!!!) indicates a good connection; a series of periods (.....) or the messages [timed out] or [failed] indicate that the connection failed.

Following is an example of a successful ping command to a remote server with the address 172.16.0.0:
